Job Description
As a Controls Technician with Garlock, you will design, install, troubleshoot, and improve control systems for manufacturing equipment in industrial environments. Duties will include working individually and working with other team members. The Controls Technician provides the design, development, maintenance, documentation, and troubleshooting for the PLC software and electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic controls.


  • Perform control level issue diagnosis and troubleshooting of different controller software and hardware components, and be on call as needed. Support maintenance in a maximum state of reliability to ensure manufacturing processes are continuously in operation with minimal downtime.
  • Ability and desire to work in a hands-on manufacturing environment, partnering with skilled trades associates acting as a resource for electrical expertise and train plant personnel on the operation and maintenance of equipment.
  • Maintain existing PLC-based systems in reliable condition, including program back-ups and all necessary software, support contracts, and licenses.
  • Prepare Scope of Work and bid documents of controls systems requirements for fabrication and installation. Manage various contractors simultaneously during lifetime of multiple projects, acting as a liaison for internal and external resources.
  • Perform hands-on start-up for process equipment (e.g., drives, PLCs, HMIs, instrumentation, and motor control systems). Develop and complete process equipment validations and documentation.
  • Draft new Procedures and Work Instructions, as well as training of staff for these expectations.
  • Propose improvements to existing equipment and implement. Train/support production and maintenance personnel on controls improvements.
  • Use AutoCAD to review, develop and maintain electrical schematics and drawings. Document control system upgrades and equipment configuration changes.
  • Continued education on Controls related topics. Keep up to date with industry standards and technology.
  • Self-motivated, with a high level of initiative and a proactive approach to learning and applying new skills. Willingness to contact support vendors to work through issues with equipment when necessary.
  • Function self-directed and have the ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks, delivering results in a dynamic environment. Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships across all levels in the organization.

  • 2-year professional electrical training degree with 5+ years working experience, or 4-year BS degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related fields
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize different projects and work load
  • PLC software, HMI programming, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic hardware control experience and aptitude
  • Experience with industrial motor drive and control systems
  • Industrial networking experience

  • Requirements:
  • Flexibility with work hours and days (This facility operates 24 hours a day, 5 to7 days a week)
  • Working knowledge of "AutoCAD" or Solidworks, MS Project and MS Office.
  • Ability to troubleshoot low voltage control and instrumentation circuits
  • Knowledge of vision systems and robotics is a plus.
  • In depth knowledge and familiarity with Allen-Bradley controllers and programming standards, familiarity with Siemens a plus.

  • WORKING CONDITIONS : Laboratory, Manufacturing Floor, Office. Some travel may be required, (5% - 10%)
